Description
The Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) are a suite of indexes produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) that rank geographic areas across Australia according to relative socio-economic advantage and disadvantage. SEIFA is derived from Census data and is widely used in government, finance, real estate, infrastructure planning, and social research to provide socio-economic context for analysis and decision-making.
SEIFA 2021 is based on data from the 2021 Census of Population and Housing and reflects the relative socio-economic conditions of people living in different areas at that time. The dataset provides consistent, nationally comparable measures that enable analysis across multiple geographic levels.
The four SEIFA indexes included are:
- Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSD)
- Index of Relative Socio-Economic Advantage and Disadvantage (IRSAD)
- Index of Economic Resources (IER)
- Index of Education and Occupation (IEO)
Each index includes scores, ranks, and deciles that allow areas to be compared both within and across geographies. These measures support use cases such as identifying relative disadvantage, assessing investment risk and opportunity, informing service delivery planning, enriching location intelligence platforms, and enhancing socio-economic modelling.

Use Cases
360-Degree Customer View
SEIFA can be used to enrich a 360-degree customer view by providing socio-economic context at the location level, helping organisations better understand the relative advantage, affordability, and risk profile of customers and communities. When combined with customer, property, or transactional data, SEIFA supports more informed segmentation, targeting, and service design by highlighting underlying economic conditions that influence customer behaviour, needs, and outcomes.
Economic Impact Analysis
By comparing SEIFA scores, ranks, and deciles before and after an intervention; or between affected and control areas; analysts can assess how economic shocks, infrastructure investments, policy changes, or major developments influence relative advantage and disadvantage over time. SEIFA is commonly used to contextualise changes in employment, income, education, and housing outcomes, helping to identify which communities experience positive spillover effects versus those that remain vulnerable. When integrated with time-series data such as development approvals, infrastructure spend, population growth, or industry activity, SEIFA enables robust spatial analysis of distributional impacts, supports equity-focused evaluation, and strengthens evidence-based decision-making for public sector, infrastructure, and investment-led economic assessments.
